United 1 - 1 Wolves

Fred scored his first goal for Man Utd. Hopefully the first of many. Photo: mirror.co.uk
Ahh that was so disappointing but this seems to have become our standard nowadays, hasn't it? Old Trafford is no longer the fortress it once was and whenever we get a couple of good results, our hopes get abruptly dashed by dropping points in very winnable fixtures. This has been happening for five years now, so it's about time I get used to it.

Wolves started brightly and forced DDG into a couple of decent saves before United started to dictate play. Perhaps against the run of play, Fred scored a very good goal and I thought we were comfortable for the remainder of the first half without really troubling our opponents. We did have a chance to go 2-0 up a few seconds before the break when a stunning effort from our Brazilian was kept out by a combination of Rui Patricio and the right post. United started the second half looking like they were raring to go but were hit with a sucker punch when Moutinho scored after a fine move by Wolves. Pogba was too casual in the lead up to Wolves' goal and I think Shaw should have done better too. If I was Mourinho, I'd probably be very angry at Pogba as he unnecessarily lost possession in our third. Bar this, I thought Pogba had a very good game.

DDG was his brilliant self and Smalling looked very confident. Lindelof and Shaw will have better days. Valencia had a poor game. I probably prefer seeing Young play at right fullback instead of Antonio and hopefully Dalot is the real deal and can cement his place there in the future. Fred looked very bright and I was a bit surprised to see him subbed off. Fellaini was good when breaking down play but could have been better when we were attacking. There was a moment when he headed the ball to goal from a very difficult position when squaring the ball was a better option. Lingard was lively but not really inspiring. Lukaku had an off day, although to his defence he didn't really have any service today. As for Alexis, well, it's not really happening for him, is it? If I was Martial, I'd be offended if I see Sanchez start another PL game ahead of me. After such a bright preseason, it's very disappointing to see Alexis have absolutely no impact on a game almost on a weekly basis.

As City and Liverpool destroy their opponents, we have to make do with a draw. We definitely ain't winning the title so hopefully City and/or Chelsea don't have too many stumbles along the the season. I am not prepared to see Liverpool win the title, I shudder at the thought but with the way they are playing, come May, this may well be a possibility.

Derby in the League Cup next.

PS. GREAT to see Sir Alex back at Old Trafford. Some things are more important than football and his return to health is without a doubt his biggest victory yet. He looked quite good for someone who suffered a massive stroke and was given a deserved rapturous welcome as he climbed the stairs to his seat in the directors' box. Welcome back Sir Alex!

Alexis' afternoon summed up in the video below.
