What a performance that was. Undoubtedly our best game this season. There wasn't a single player out there who didn't have a good game and, I must say, it was truly a tactical masterclass by Jose Mourinho who managed to shut down Chelsea's most threatening players. Hazard, Pedro and Costa were marked out of the game. Our solid defence gave us a good platform to catch Chelsea on the counter as Lingard and Rahsford tested the Blues' slow defenders.
Herrera was phenomenal today. He made our first goal, scored our second and marked Eden Hazard, probably this season's best player, out of the game. Ander's assist was a playmaker's dream; beautifully executed and weighted. Perfect.Yes, he handled the ball before he made the assist but who cares. He then scored the goal that gave us some breathing space albeit with a heavy deflection. If I'm not mistaken, that was his first PL goal since his deflected effort vs. Arsenal last season. He looked like a man in a siege and absolutely pumped to win the war. Man of the match, no doubt.
Rashford deserves a special mention as well. His effort up front showed was a joy to watch. Ibrahimovic is a great player but when I see a performance like Rashford's today, I you can't help but wonder where we'd be standing in the league if we had a faster, more willing, player up front. It was so great to see us attacking Chelsea with so much intensity. It's something that a 35 year old Ibrahimovic cannot do. A fast and deadly striker to partner Rashford for next season? Yes, please.
Young was excellent and should have probably scored a goal too. Darmian had his best game in ages. Bailly and Rojo were up for Costa. Rojo looked really up for the Costa challenge and was even more buoyed by fans when they started shouting 'Argentina!'. Valencia had a usual day at the office. Pogba did well today as the much hyped Kante was kept out of the game. Pogba's tackle on Costa was something that pumped the Old Trafford crowd even more. Fellaini won a lot of balls in the middle of the pitch, a very good performance from the big Belgian. Finally, Lingard made a lot of runs that opened the Chelsea defence and let Rashford do the damage. His inclusion ahead of Martial might have raised a few eyebrows but Mourinho's decision was vindicated with a tireless performance. Well done to all.
I'm obviously super hyped after that performance but we must remember that there were some great performances under LVG that proved to be nothing but false dawns. I can remember vs. City, Liverpool and Tottenham two seasons ago and vs. Arsenal last season. Hopefully, we'll be able to build upon today's performance. Anderlecht next.
I'm off to watch match of the day. It's the first time I'm watching it in ages.
