United 2 - 1 Liverpool
What a goal by Rashford! - Photo mirror.co.uk |
Now that was a good game, probably the best Man Utd vs. Liverpool match in quite some time. I was pleasantly surprised by how United started the game, looking to attack Liverpool. Given the scousers' attacking prowess, I thought our players would be set to defend from the off and catch Liverpool on the counter - just like we did at Anfield. However, the approach was really positive and our players looked determined and pumped for the big game and they certainly didn't disappoint me today.
Liverpool were nowhere to be seen during the first half. I thought United were excellent. Rashford scored a brilliant goal that put us in front and doubled the score a few minutes later. The lad looked ecstatic to be back in the starting XI and on the scoresheet and I am ever so pleased for him. Lukaku had a say in both goals and I liked his involvement today. He was a bit out of the game during the second half but that's hardly his fault. Well done to both.
Our defence was excellent, our midfield almost perfect and our forward play was really good. Mata could have put us 3 up but decided to go for a spectacular scissor kick when he had ample time to chest down an inch perfect cross by Alexis and finish. He probably wasn't aware of the time he had in the box; either that or he wanted to recreate his Anfield goal against the same opposition on the 22nd March 2015.
The second half was a different story. Liverpool were superior but we actually looked in control throughout. Yes, they had a few attempts but I can't really remember DDG making a save. Their goal was a bit of a freak own goal by the otherwise brilliant Bailly. It's a shame Eric only played 10 Premier League games this season. He's a hell of a central defender, definitely our best along Phil Jones. Our two best central defenders seem to be always injured though. Liverpool had a lot of corners but our defence dealt with all of them ever so well. To be honest, Liverpool should have been awarded a penalty or two but who cares as long as we won.
I thought the boys were excellent. Ashley Young was immense. How he managed to keep Salah silent throughout the game is beyond me. Every time I've seen Liverpool play, Salah always created a chance for himself or his team mates. He did nothing today. Well done Ashley - you managed to keep one of the Premier League's best players at bay.
This was also Scott McTominay's best game so far. He was composed and didn't do any wrong. Yes, he seems to play the easy pass but sometimes simplicity is beautiful and I can't understand why some in the crowd booed him. We've got other players who's role is to make the risky passes that open defences up. Well played Scott.
All our players done well today and it's also good to have Fellaini back as he might come in handy when we need to grind a result. I am writing this a few hours after the game and I am still pumped. Nothing feels better than a win over Liverpool. Yes, they have a very good team. Yes, a world class addition or two at the back might turn them into actual challengers next year but till then we have the bragging rights.
Seville next. Will not put it beyond United to ruin everything with a bad result on Tuesday. I love our players but I still don't seem to trust them. Hopefully they prove me wrong. I do trust Mourinho in cup games though.
