Whether it's the FA Cup, League Cup or Europa League, winning silverware is sweet...and we've won all three trophies in the past 12 months. Nothing beats winning the League or/and the Champions League, obviously, but this is a very good step. We're now in next season's Champions League and that promises to attract better football players. Anyway, we've managed to save quite a poor season and we can say that we won three pieces of silverware and Mourinho made sure he reminded us that fact when we lifted the trophy today.....even though I don't really consider the Community Shield to be important.
Tactically we were good today but I must admit that we had an easy ride. Sometimes it looked like boys vs. men despite Ajax having much of the possession. We sat a bit too deep for my liking but hey, we won the trophy so who am I to complain. We knew what we were in for when Mourinho became our manager. It's what Mourinho does.
I think all our players did well with the exception of Rashford and Mata who had a difficult night. I was particularly surprised with Darmian who barely put a foot wrong tonight. The other defenders all stepped up to the occasion and Pogba, Herrera and Fellaini did very well in midfield.
So here we are after 64 matches, a looooong season has finally come to an end. I think both Valencia and Ander Herrera were our best players this season. I expect a few big signings next season too as a club of this magnitude should be challenging for the league. We'll also be playing Champions League football next year and without an addition or two we'll be miles away from the level that the likes of Real, Barca and Bayern are at.
On a sad note, I think we've seen the last of Wayne Rooney tonight. He won't be here next season because the man simply wants to play football and he won't get that at United. It's been an honour to see a fiery boy become a man in United's colours. United's best goal scorer and despite having a few reds deny it, the man's a club legend. To be honest it's good to see him go with a trophy and I won't be too gutted when he does eventually leave because seeing him play nowadays almost hurts me. It's sad to see how much he's declined during the past 2 or 3 years.
There are probably a few more players who we won't see next season. De Gea is probably one of them. But we should be celebrating another trophy that is coming to Old Trafford rather than thinking about next season.
So here's to another European trophy. We've now won the lot. Well done to all the players and coaches. This football club rarely lets me down. Come on United!!
