What a game!
What a result! That was a European cup winning performance by our boys! Hah, I
am obviously taking the piss.
This wasn’t a
tricky game. It was a game that we were expected to win and we did just that.
Shrewsbury had no intention of winning the game; all they cared about was to
come out of it with a respectable scoreline. For this reason, we had to deal
with a congested Shrewsbury box but we were in control from the first whistle
and a goal or two were inevitable, despite Shrewsbury’s huffing and puffing.
The player I
least expected to break the deadlock, came up with his first goal of the season
a few minutes before the end of the first half. I have no idea what Chris
Smalling was doing in Shrewsbury’s box but I think he might have gotten a tad
bored at the back. Anyway, thank heavens he opened the score because if we
hadn’t scored before the end of the first half, some sort of nervousness might
have crept into our team at half time. The game was put to bed when Mata scored
a delightful free-kick during the first half’s added time. When was the last
time we’ve seen a goal from a free-kick?!!
We could have
scored more goals during the second half but only scored one. Lingard finished
Herrera’s excellent lobbed pass to round of a decent display albeit against a
weak side. Not a performance to get too excited about but it was good to see
the likes of Memphis trying hard to make something happen.
We’re now in the
semi finals and a step away from playing at Wembley. Been a while since we last
played a competitive game there! I still think it’s stupid to play a semi-final
at Wembley because this has obviously put a dent to the prestige of playing at
Wembley for the final.....but anyway. We’ll play West Ham at home in our next
round. Not the hardest of draws so I expect us to have a real go at winning
this cup especially with Spurs, Liverpool, City and either Chelsea or Everton
out of the competition. Arsenal also have to deal with an away replay against
Hull City.
Speaking of Arsenal,
they will be visiting Old Trafford this Sunday. I don’t want them to win the
league so hopefully we can make them drop some points. We’ve done reasonably well
against the big teams this season so there’s no reason why we cannot win this
game. Come on United!
Oh, I forgot! We've got the Europa League this Thursday! Yes, we lost away from home but losing to this Danish side at Old Trafford would be a travesty.
